Sanjay Jaleel
makes a mark at film festival
Thirteen year old
Sanjay Jaleel's first film "Luke Birthday" was among 40 short
films screened; screenplay, story and direction all by him.
MUSCAT | He is only 13 year old but quite an accomplished young chap. The boy
studying in Grad VII at the Indian School A Ghubra is the youngest participant
at the sixth Muscat International Film Festival (MIFF). Thirteen year old Sanjay
Jaleel’s first film Luke’s Birth day was among the 40 short films screened at
the various venues of the Muscat International Film Festival. It was selected
from the 8 short films that were entered in the foreign film category
(competition section) to be screened at the festival. “He is the only child
among the other adults said Abdul Jaleel father of Sanjay talking to Times of
Oman. The 10minute long film’ screenplay story and direction have been handled
by Sanjay. “The film has been done with the minimum utilities and resources yet
it was selected to be a part of the Muscat Film Festival for its quality” said
Abdul Jaleel. Sanjay is fond of watching movies and is a keen script writer. “He
has written scripts for school plays and other forums earlier too” informed his
father. Explaining the story of the film Sanjay said “It is about a boy Luke.
The film opens with the boy waking up on his birthday only to find himself
caught in a monotony of everyday life. The boy is always under pressure from his
father who has high aspirations for him so much so that he doesn’t care about
the boy’s feeling and desires. Even the birthday gift turns out to be huge
disappointment for him.” “I have dedicated the films to all the Lukes of the
world” he smiled. He is also grateful to his parents teachers and the crew for
encouraging him to make the film ‘at the age of 12’. Yes the film was shot some
months ago and most of the actors are people he knows. One among them is
Sreekumar vice principal of Indian School Ghubra who plays the role of Luke’s
father. Local boy Abhishek a student of ISM plays the role of Luke. The camera
was handled by his father Abdul Jaleel the final cut sound track and mixing is
by M.K. Shine. Sanjay intends to script his independent films sometime may be
soon. “This honour of his film being screened at MIFF has made him very
confident” said Abdul.
