We
have great pleasure in introducing Commander
P Venugopalan, Indian Navy (Retd), Dy
General Manager (Operations), Shamel
International Industries, L.L.C, Muscat,
Alumnus of NSSCE, Palakkad and a
member of the Kerala Engineers Family, Muscat.
He was the Chairman of the Attendance Committee
of KEF, Muscat during 2008-09. He is the KEF
General Secretarry for the year 2009-20109
Born on 16 July 1963 at Thiruvananthapuram, he
is the second child of Late Sri P Raghunatha
Menon, Dy Commissioner, Excise (Retd) and Smt.
Devi Menon, a housewife. His elder sister is
married and living in Muscat. His immediate
younger brother is a Chartered Accountant at
Palakkad and the youngest one is employed in
Bahrain.
He underwent schooling at Thiruvananthapuram,
Kozhikode and Palakkad accompanying his father
on his postings and completed SSLC at PMGMHS
Palakkad and Pre-degree Course at Government
Victoria College, Palakkad. Thereafter, he
joined NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad and
graduated in Mechanical Engineering. While in
college itself he had made up his mind to
undertake national service and joined the Indian
Navy after clearing SSB interview during his
pre-final year. Immediately after completing the
course in Aug 1985 he joined Naval Academy at
Kochi for training.

During his tenure in Corps of Naval
Architects in the Navy he was selected
for higher studies and completed PG
Diploma in Naval Architecture at IIT
Delhi in 1988 and MSc (Ship Design) at
the Naval Academy, St. Petersburg,
Russia in 1993, specialising in
submarine design.
During his illustrious career spanning
22 years, in the Navy, he was entrusted
with a multitude of responsibilities
including ship design, ship production
project management, ship repair, and
also as faculty in Naval Architecture at
IIT Delhi. He single-handedly, for the
first time in the Indian Navy, applied
the new software for ship hull form
development of a new project and the
keel laying for that ship, the first
indigenous aircraft carrier was recently
performed by the Hon. Defence Minister,
Sri AK Antony at Cochin Shipyard.

Commander Venugopalan opted for premature
retirement and left the Navy on 01 Nov 2007 and
has since been working with Shamel
International, Muscat a leading brand in
interior decoration in the middle-east with
projects such as Atlantis, Dubai, Chedi Sarai,
Muscat, Hilton RAK and as nominated interiors
sub-contractor for various Royal Palaces and
villas in Oman.
Venugopalan was married in the year 1990 to Smt
Lekha, a Commerce graduate from Providence
College, Kozhikode, daughter of Shi K
Rajagopalan Nair, Div Manager, LIC (Retd) & Smt
Lalitha, who are settled down in Kozhikode.
The couple is blessed with a son who finished
Class XII in 2009 and is aiming to pursue
graduation in engineering.
